At Timber Services, our team of trained machinists have a combined 80 years' experience operating a variety of woodworking machinery.
We're proud to say a bulk of our work is won through our ability to machine to customers' bespoke requirements, offering the ability to manufacture and produce a bespoke product to suit specific needs.
If you're not sure whether or not the product you need is off the shelf, feel free to ask! Our friendly sales team will be happy to offer an off-the-shelf product and quote for any machining you may need doing.
Whether you need:
- a sheet of MDF cut to size to make your project easier, or just to fit in your car;
- tapered firring pieces for a pitched roof;
- pattresses cutting for suspended ceilings;
- some sawn hardwood Planed All Round for use in fine furniture making or display use;
... or anything else, let Timber Services help you.
Tapered Firring Pieces
In flat roof construction where a fall or gradient is required to assist in water run-off, tapered firring pieces are the most efficient way to create that pitch.
Screwing or frame-nailing the firring strips down to your joists gives a secure fixing for you to then apply your roofing sheets on top, whether it's OSB as many structural engineers and architrects now specify, or Hardwood Plywood.
At Timber Services, we cut your firrings to order using your required measurements. We first cut a template piece and then use our re-saw to cut the rest! Give us the sizes you need, i.e. the length of the firring piece, and the taper (for example 95mm tapered down to 0mm).
In some cases, you may know your Gradient needed but not the measurements:
- If your required Gradient is 1:80, for example, divide 1 by 80 to give 0.0125.
- Multiply that figure by your joist Length, let’s say 4.8m, to give your Fall.
- In this example:
0.0125 x 4.8m = 60mm. - So your firrings must taper 60mm down to 0mm over 4.8m.
Re-sawing and Bandsawing
Using our heavy duty Wadkin Resaw, we have the capacity to rip, deep cut, arris cut, and generally re-size any timber we stock.
Whether you need some of our timber re-machining to match up to an existing non-standard joist size, or deep cutting some carcassing timbers to a specific size to sit within steel beams, Timber Services has the tools to help you.
Usually we only machine our own timber, where we can guarantee there are no contaminants or potentially dangerous foreign objects buried within the wood, such as nails, shrapnel or other debris. This ensures our saftey and maintains the integrity of our blades and machinery.
Table Saw
Equipped with a state of the art Altendorf table saw, Timber Services can re-cut a variety of materials to suit your needs.
Examples of our day-to-day large and small scale machining services include:
- Ripping softwood structural plywood down to specific sizes to fit between steel upright studs on the ever-popular SFS (Steel Frame Structure) builds;
- Trenching custom size door lining heads;
- Cutting down sheet materials to better fit in a car to transport home;
- Straightening sawn hardwood boards to prepare them for further planing.
